About this talk

Caregiving is a vital and meaningful role, often undertaken within families and close relationships. However, the ongoing responsibility of supporting another person’s needs can place sustained emotional, physical, and cognitive demands on caregivers.

When care is provided over long periods, especially alongside work obligations, family, and personal needs, stress can accumulate in ways that are not always visible or acknowledged.Caregiver stress is shaped by multiple factors, including emotional labour, role strain, responsibility without respite, and limited opportunities for recovery.

While caregivers may be highly capable and resilient, wellbeing and capacity can be severely compromised when self-care is consistently deprioritised.

Understanding caregiver stress therefore requires looking beyond individual coping to the broader psychological and relational context in which care interactions take place.

  • Understanding Caregiver Stress: Why caregiving roles can lead to chronic stress, emotional fatigue, and overload.
  • Recognising the Impact on Well-being: Exploring how sustained caregiving demands affect mental, emotional, and physical health.
  • Balancing Care for Others and Self: Understand the tension between responsibility, boundaries, and personal wellbeing.
  • Supporting Sustainable Caregiving: Identifying psychological principles that support resilience, self-awareness, and adaptive coping in caregiving roles.
